Managing A Diverse Workforce Essay
Managing a group of people is difficult enough, let alone a group of people that come from different backgrounds and bring different abilities to the table. It is necessary to lead these people uniformly while focusing on the strengths of each individual. Every worker brings a different strength to the table, but along with that, comes a different weakness. Strengths and weaknesses come into play when looking at any situation, not just management. The following are ways in which I would be able to focus on a diverse group as a whole, but also individually.
My first task would be to make a list of all the workers that I have in my unit or on my team. From there I would group them into different groups according to their strengths. As an example, I would group all those that were technologically advanced in one group, and all those that have strong personal and customer service skills in another group. I would then assign different tasks to the different groups to make sure that they are playing towards their strengths. While these tasks are being performed I would then be able to break the groups down even that much further making sure to focus on the individual person. Each person would be assigned a role in their group that not only focused on their strengths but hid their weaknesses. After recognizing their weakness I would slowly have them overcome this weakness with additional training and focus. For the group as a whole this would be beneficial because it would be working like more of a system of a machine that has moving parts. Each part would function properly because each part has the strongest pieces possible to provide the work for that part. There is also room for movement and room for improvement as the process moves along and the machine needs a fine tuning.
