Marginalization is an act of keeping a group or a person at the periphery of society, demarcating a boundary between them and the rest of the general public. It creates groups among these people as well, and one such group is that of veterans in the society. Veterans are people who have long served a country or nation by risking their lives and helping to earn the honor and name of their nation. However, these people are not always treated well and given the respect they deserve. They are often pushed to the margins of society, economically, socially, politically and even culturally.
The reason why these people are so disregarded by the society is the society itself. These people often return injured, homeless and broke when they return to their countries and end up living lives of poverty and loneliness. Brought to the streets at the hands of fate, they are considered alcoholics, drug addicts and con men instead of impoverished people seeking the help of those whose lives they have saved by risking their own. The dilemma lies in the mentality of the general public who never asks or helps these people. Moreover, it is the government which is often held responsible for the lack of provision of jobs, employment, and facilitation at their return.
The problem with marginalizing these veterans is then the following problems which pursue their condition. These people often have to overstep their dignity and integrity, coming out on wheelchairs and begging for aid. Many suffer from depression and become patients of the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, which often stays life-long if their condition never changes.
The responsibility towards veterans is with the government as well as the people who need to stop marginalizing people who are socially unequal, rather they need to empower them, provide them a decent living and give them the respect they deserve in order to help them live decent lives and this could also be a symbol of gratefulness for what these veterans once did for them.
