Compared to other secular leadership measurement that are mostly measured by physical structures and how much a leader has influenced financially, Christian leadership is measured by the number of people that have been touched, transformed and mentored by him or her. Christian leadership is not just about using people to achieve certain targets for the organization but to personally impact on the individual soul who will in turn impact on the soul of the other. Generally, leadership involves mentoring people to be able to fulfill a particular task. This is what every secular and religious organization aims at. However, secular leadership enters into a mentorship process for a self-centered purpose of benefiting the organization rather than the individual. Christian leadership acknowledges the fact that each person, at their level has the capability of influencing, even when they do not have a title. Mentorship is hence done to ensure that a person leaves an exemplary life that will motivate others admire and also live such a life.
Ministry leadership is hence looked at in terms of the legacy that a leader leaves, not only to the people that he serves but also to his generation. In ministry, it is believed that a person cannot be effective to lead if he or she is not able to manage their family. Ministry leadership will therefore be measured from the personal integrity of the leader, the impact he or she is having on the family and then their community. The most successful leader in ministry is one who is a good manager of the family as well as impacting positively on others. The first people that a ministry leader is supposed to mentor are the family and then, the local church before going to a wider community. There is a strong emphasis for a leader to not only display leadership qualities but also be a man or woman of integrity.
Ministry leadership is not just about commanding people to do or accomplish some tasks, when one is not making any effort to accomplish them. in ministry, it is believed that a person can only give what they have and influence only at the level of which he or she has been influenced. Ministry leadership is not based on paper work on the number of years one has served, the highest level of qualification but rather the paths that he has walked through and the challenges he or she has been able to overcome. A ministry leader can only guide others on matters that he or she has personally experienced or he is able to achieve. This implies that a ministry leader will not tell people what to do but rather show them how to do it. He should hence be at the forefront, performing what he wants his followers to perform.
Ministry leadership is also measured on how well a leader relates with people around him. It is ministry that is based on biblical teachings, with Christ being the role model. The kind of humility and selflessness that Christ displayed is therefore to be displayed by a ministry leader. He or she needs to understand that he is living for the sake of the people that he is serving and should therefore be ready to make every sacrifice, including dying for him. Ministry leadership is not about how much compensation a person will get after accomplishing the task, but rather an inner passion to see people transformed. The greatest reward for a ministry leader is hence the lost and desperate souls that get a complete transformation through his or her influence.
