Minister Of Health Essay Examples
The Honorable Rona Ambrose, P.C.
House of Commons, Parliament Buildings
Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0A6
Dear Madam:
I am writing this letter to bring to your attention the adverse effects of widely used insecticide called neonicotinoids on the ecosystem. The International Task Force on Systemic Pesticide published its conclusions in the last summer after conducting the 800 scientific research studies. They concluded that pesticides like neonicotinoids even in none lethal quantity are extremely injurious to honey bees, worms, butterflies and other insects. Neonicotinoids act as a nerve poison when ingested by bees from flowers causing delayed mortality. Though the study was primarily focused on honey bees, the report says, these chemicals are equally poisonous for ants, parasitoids, termites and aquatic invertebrates. The report proposes to ban neonicotinoids gradually on the global scale. European Commission has banned three neonicotinoid insecticides describing their adverse effects on honey bees and ecosystem as a reason for the ban. The European Environment Agency claims that this ban is just a starter and proposes to restrict the use of all the neonicotinoids and other similar pesticides. EEA Executive Director, Jacqueline McGlade, expresses his views as, “Based on the body of evidence, we can see that it is absolutely correct to take a precautionary approach and ban these chemicals.” The Canada's Pest Management Regulation Agency has not taken any precautionary action on the findings of the International Task Force on Systemic Pesticide; unfathomably, it has, recently, allowed the use of pesticides very similar to neonicotinoids completely sidelining the effects these chemicals have on aquatic invertebrate species, birds or other insects.
I would request the Health Ministry to look into the matter and to come up with an appropriate response to this ecological and environmental issue. An appropriate response might be a three-tire strategy. The Government should construct a Canadian Taskforce to evaluate the effects of these pesticides on Canadian soil. Health Ministry should arrange a board of experts to evaluate the research conducted by other agencies and give their proposals accordingly. The Government must reorganized and revamp Canada's Pest Management Regulation Agency. Health Ministry should update the regulatory criteria for insecticides in the light of recent developments and above-mentioned facts. Madam, I sincerely hope that your ministry would look into the matter and will take the appropriate steps in this regard.
