Museum Of Fine Arts Essay Example

During my trip to the Museum of Fine Arts, I viewed many pieces, but the one I chose to write about was the Letting Go, by Sarah Sze. A mixed media piece that was installed on site, it did not say anything to me immediately, allowing its ideological context to be explored more fully than other pieces. The piece stood in a large, open room with many other pieces like it. By that I mean all of the pieces were mixed media, likely installed on site, and open to interpretation. People with befuddled looks shuffled past me and I began to hear many mutter phrases equated to “this art does not mean anything because it does not immediately tell me what it is about. I am bored, let us leave.” This affected my interpretation greatly because, rather than listen to those around me, I believed the art had everything to say instead of nothing. Why else would somebody to the trouble of installing such a grandiose piece to say nothing at all?
Its curation allowed me to surmise it was contemporary; it bordered on abstract. There was no traditional framing. The media burst from the artistic skeleton as if a bomb as gone off. I considered these words. “As if a bomb had gone off” the outline of the piece made it look as if it was a boat, though this is only a loose interpretation. The name, also, “The Letting Go,” began to sink into my mind. The media burst forth, as if attempting to escape its frame, or even the artist. “The Letting Go,” was, in fact, saying everything immediately. It was, essentially, letting go. That is what made it art, because sometimes that is what art is. Art is about letting go, or finding your limits and pushing past them. In this case, Sze sailed past them. The subtly of the piece, disallowing viewers to immediately grasp the concept of the piece is what made it good art. Onlookers too feebler to sit for a moment attempting to comprehend the piece were not worthy of it. The art is not able to employ any gaze, but rather forces the spectator to look at themselves in a different manner, which is another reason the piece is a successful work of art.
