Music Summary- El Siquisirí Report Samples
“El Siquisiri” is a Mexican song played by the band Los Pregoneros del Puerto. The composer of the piece is anonymous and the piece fits in the Son Jarocho style. The most striking element related to this band is the harp which is played by Gonzalo Mata. The harp has double role, used as a base instrument and also to lead the music further. The vocalist Jose Guiterrez creates with his voice swirling, strumming melodic lines, which are extremely effective harmonized by the two guitarists. The instruments used in this song are only traditional instruments. For the rhythm, after a quick listening around the sound of the piece, is seems to me that I hear jarana jarocha, an instrument which is very similar to guitar but which has eight strings. On the other side, for the melody of the song, the composer uses requinto jarocho, a plucked string instrument with four or five strings also similar with the guitar, compared with the shape of the instrument.
The song starts with the three instruments playing alone, a long solo part. The instrument requinto jarocho has a sound like a little light guitar, playing on a fast speed compared with jarana jarocha also played at fast speed but the sound being deeper and warmer. Sometimes, the player is plucking the instrument strongly. The harp has a beautiful sound like a piano. The singer is playing with joy in a high voice, having a leading man and after that, the others join him, creating a dialogue between one voice and the other voices. The lyrics talks about a place from Veracruz, which the singer plays with joy, describing the happy times that he has enjoyed there.
