Understanding one’s communication style is a way to truly understand one’s self (“Importance of Understanding Different Communication Styles”). In my case, the test revealed that I am an “emotive” person, meaning, I rate high in the dominance and sociability aspects of communication, demonstrate a spontaneous and boisterous behavior, can be considered an extrovert, have a natural persuasiveness and leadership qualities, make use of facial expressions and hand gestures to stress a point, always outspoken, and can be offensive sometimes. All these attributes are true in my case as I have observed the same qualities in how I communicate with other people (“Understanding Your Communication Style”, n.d., p. 16).
As a nurse, I am a very caring and supportive individual. I express my emotions through body language aside from verbal communication and can cry easily and get upset as easily, too. Despite these, people are easily drawn to my personality as I am very spontaneous with my actions. I have strong leadership potentials that’s why I hold a management position at work. I directly manage 10 rehabilitation aides who all have diverse personality types. Because of this, I have to use various communication styles in order to reach out to them.
I don’t feel shy when I have to approach them and ask them to do something. In cases when I have to make a negative write up about them, it makes me feel uncomfortable, but because it is part of the job, I still do it. These are the times when I assert myself in order for them to understand that I am doing my job. Because of my natural persuasive nature, I am able to make them understand the reasons behind the decisions and consequent actions. In the end, I reassure them that they will always have my back (“”Communication Styles”).
I sometimes have to deviate from my normal communication behavior, which is called communication style flexing. It sometimes makes me uncomfortable knowing it is not really who I am. But considering the management position I hold at work, I realize that learning to adjust my communication style is what will help me develop and maintain wonderful relationships with my team.
