I understand that the M&T Bank is interested in improving community relations and considering various options to increase cultural awareness at the branch level. I have come up with a new CSR program that draws the attention of our staff and customers to cultural awareness during the upcoming lunar New Year season. The CSR program can significantly increase the number of new clients, showcase a new look of our bank to the current customers, and increase the company’s visibility in the local communities.
Community Issue
According to proquest.com, “New York prides itself on a tradition of successfully absorbing immigrants.” (New York immigration, 2008). However, there are presently not enough programs to promote traditions of certain ethnic groups such as the Asian cultures. Rochelle Ford, an assistant professor at Howard University, stated in 2005 that “Just think, by investing little today. You can begin to reach the nearly 12.5 million Asian- Americans with more than $3 billion buying power” (Ford, 2005). Getting involved in this lunar New Year could not only help preserve the Asian national cultures and enrich various heritages within the community, but also benefit our company.
Benefit to the company
The leading bank in United States, Bank of America, recognizes the importance of diversity. One of their CSR programs focuses on art and culture. Rena DeSisto, Bank of America global arts and culture executive, stated that “We believe the arts have the power to connect people and help local economies thrive” (Ford, 2015). The program helps Bank of America to be popular among most people, particularly those who value arts and culture.
My proposed CSR program is not only different from that of Bank of America, but also can benefit our company by increasing its coverage within the local communities. With ads promoting the program, we can make M&T Bank engage in different cultures and traditions such as getting involved in lunar New Year events. By having well- trained employees, we can effectively spread our intended messages to many customers. Asian customers want others to know about their culture and values, and other clients appreciate to engage in the new cultural activities. Thus, the community as whole benefits to maintain the rich cultures, and we can help them achieve these goals.
Program Implementation
An ad would be posted on the company website. Posters and banners that read: “Happy Lunar New Year from M&T Bank” would be placed at the various branches of the bank. Donation of funds for the programs are accepted at local branches and all employees are encouraged to participate on the programs.
Low Cost
Posting information about this lunar New Year on company websites and Facebook pages are completely free of cost. The only monetary cost associated with the program is making of the banners and any training required for the employees. Overall, funding the program is extremely inexpensive and it can produce low cost advertisement to the company.
