Why the Border of the United States Should be Open.

With more than 11 million illegal immigrants already residing the United States and more than 600,000 people (2012 statistics) being caught every year in their pursuit of freedom and American dream, it is difficult to remain observant and not to be defensive of your own homeland. After all, each of us is very selective about the guests we invite to our houses. However, there are a number of reasons, which make open borders a much more logical and grounded choice.
First of all, the United States has always claimed to have been built on the foundation of natural rights, a major point in the Declaration of Independence, where people’s equal moral worth and the rights to life, liberty and private property precede the creation of the state. This gives a basic ground to accept anyone who desires to reside on the grounds of the United States, regardless of their race, gender, age etc. It is wrong to argue that the open borders will bring only criminals, terrorists and rapists. The are no less dangerous people in Mexico than there are within the United States. In addition to that, it is worth mentioning, that the United States itself was based on the idea of migration, with the forefathers who had in mind a country open to all honest and freedom-seeking men. It only makes sense to recognize the foundation values of the United States and to live by those words, if one considers himself a patriot.
Humanitarians would also call for an open border. On the one hand, it will allow people to actually return to their homeland. Many illegal immigrants are stuck in between because they are afraid of the prosecution. On the other hand, less people may die on the way to crossing the border. Many prospective immigrants become dehydrated in the trip through deserted unobserved areas, fighting for their dream to live in better human conditions.
This may come as a surprising fact, but immigration improves the economy. Despite the common misconception that immigrants are taking away “better job opportunities,” the economists all over the country have proved that the net value is positive, no matter what percentage of immigrants is in the country. After all, the more demand there is – the more production it will require – the more jobs it will create - and more products will be bought. In fact, more budget is spent on keeping the borders in a functional state. Nearly $18 billion (2012 statistics) are spent on law enforcement every year. All these money could be redirected to education and medical care.
Finally, opening borders does not mean creating a chaos in the system. Open borders existed within the Soviet Union in the past, as well as within the European Union at the moment. Having people migrate from one country to another does not prevent the Union from functioning fully as an institution and a political entity. In fact, the open borders encourage more cultural and educational exchange, which only benefits the global community.
Offering inviting politics towards immigrants in no way means inviting chaos and abolishing all the great values of liberty, patriotism, and hard work, ingrained in American culture. In fact, more studies prove that Hispanic Americans born in the States are more patriotic than any other Americans. I believe, that open borders indeed open more doors to a richer, more powerful and more educated community. We only need to put our minds to it and open our hearts to the fellow humans in order to make it work.
