The treatment and diagnosis of the disorders of the reproductive system are usually complicated by the symbolism and stigma associated with these reproductive organs and the emotion-laden behaviors and beliefs related to the reproductive health. As such, the diagnosis or treatment of any issue may be delayed because of the denial, embarrassment, fear or guilt. For this reason, patients are often reluctant some of these issues involving reproductive systems (Huether & McCance, 2013). Therefore, nurses have to take up roles in ensuring that the patients feel secure when talking about these issues.
First, I think that nurses’ role in getting information concerning such things, like urinary incontinence, sexual dysfunction, and other related issues that the patients may find difficult discussing is building confidence among the patients. Building confidence entails getting the patients to talk about these issues. As such, building confidence involves aspects such as making the patients understand that having these disorders or diseases is not an avenue for stigmatization. Nurses should make the patients realize that these disorders and disease can be treated or prevented. Therefore, the nurses’ role in this issue is to act as counselors for their patients. Patients have to be educated on the causes of their diseases, the influence on their health, the risks of failing to treat the diseases, and the various steps of counsel and leaving healthy lives after diagnosis and treatment. The best way of approaching this aspect is establishing training programs for the nurses to improve their skills in patient management. These skills will encompass effective guiding and counseling skills for the patients (Marquis & Huston, 2009). Some of these skills include proper guidance on the medications to use, and the various safety or disease prevention methods.
