“Open Door policy”, statement of policy created by the U.S in the end of 19th beginning of 20th centuries with an offer to keep China’s market open to trade with different nations. The statement was outlined by Secretary of State John Hay to Italy, Great Britain, Russia, France, Japan, and Germany. The Open Door policy was rooted in wish or businessmen in the U.S. and received universal approbation.
The principle that all nations must have same right to enter to any of the dockyards available to trade in China had been bespoken in the Anglo-Chinese treaties of Nanking and Wanghia. It is safe to say that among all countries Great Britain had more interests in trading with China. However, one may say that after the 1895, different parts of influence in China were separate among France, Great Britain and Russia. Within each of these spheres the controlling main power aspired to unique benefits of investment, and they were horrified of someone monopolizing this sphere of trade. Furthermore, these countries also were afraid of that the breakup of Asian country into economic pieces prevailed by different big powers would result in total submission and the parts of the country into colonies. It is safe to say that with a big number of main developments in the U.S one may draw a parallel to the crisis in China. Due to a new interest in foreign markets, economic depression had emerged in the 1890s.

The Good Neighbor Policy

It is essential to state that “The Good Neighbor Policy” was originally created by President Herbert Hoover. However, a man that gave a speech about this policy and made it stronger was President Franklin Roosevelt. When the government of the U.S. thought that its interests in Latin America had been threatened, or when the United States thought that any debts were not being repaid, it would interfere with military force or imply threats to make them give in during the late 19th and at the beginning of 20th century. Thus, the purpose of this policy was to repair the relations with Latin American countries. The policy made U.S. change to peaceful and non-violent tone from aggressive and violent enforcement. Moreover, its goal was to gain support of Latin American and to alter their attitude towards the U.S.
At the rise of fascism and war imperialism in other nations, the President’s administration was afraid that Latin America would follow it as well; therefore the U.S. wished to gain Latin American support before they became uncontrolled. Some of the Good Neighbor Policies were the Platt Amendment, the Clark Memorandum of 1930. It is safe to say that because of that memorandum the state department recants Theodore Roosevelt’s Corollary of 1823 to the Monroe Doctrine—that stated that a right to collect debts from foreign countries in the Occident was only possible by the United States. Nevertheless, it is essential to mention that the Clark Memorandum did not reject the right to interference per se. In 1933 due to the annulation of the Platt Amendment interference in Cuba was allowed. In 1934, the United States withdrew its sea forces from Nicaragua and Haiti.
Consequently, the “Good Neighbor Policy” was non-durable due to the beginning in the 1945 of the Cold War. Rebuilding of Europe and Japan got in the focus of the United States started to focus their attention on rebuilding Europe and Japan, and Latin American countries were forgotten and neglected.
