Operationalize A Policy Statement: Goals, Objectives, Strategies And Tactics Essays Examples
The emphasis in the book “School and Community Relations” by Moore and Gallagher (2012) is the benefits that accrue from designing public relations programs around what both the school and its specific publics need and what problems they experience. An increased importance and interest are being placed on relations skills of the community and schools. The book provides ways in which educators can enhance their communication skills so as to gain the support of their curriculum, discipline and programs by the special publics.
Policy Statement
The purpose of this policy is to spell out the role of school administrators and give guidelines on how schools can maintain better relationships with young people, staff, and the minority groups. School administrators are well placed to be at the forefront of developing good relations with the communities they operate in ( Crowson, 1992). Being the leaders at these institutions, school administrators can use their influence to implore the special public groups to support their programs and curriculum. It is the role of the school administrators to hire highly qualified teachers who can guide students in their learning and growth. Moreover, the school administrators should seek the support of the special publics in programs and curriculum development because the programs and curriculum should address the needs of the community the school is located in. Additionally, the school administrators have the role of facilitating better relations with staff so as to boost staff morale and ensure that they are motivated to deliver on their jobs. Schools are places that are mostly inhabited by young people who are in pursuit of education. After gaining this education, they are expected to use it to develop themselves and their communities. The policy supports the guidance of young people so as to exploit their potential. In addition, it is the role of school administrators to ensure people from minority groups are admitted to their schools and that they are not left out of the school system. People from minority groups require special attention and support so as to be able to pursue their education. The expectation is that school administrators will use their position to execute these roles and in return their school’s curriculum and programs will gain support from the communities they are located in and special publics they interact with.
The school system program goals have several purposes that include improving the learning environment of students, ensuring the staffs are motivated and deliver in their work, ensuring that the needs of special publics are met, and the surrounding community benefits immensely from the school.
One long-term goal would be inculcating several elements of the culture of the community in many facets of the school system program and curriculum. By pursuing to inculcate several elements of the culture in the school system program and curriculum will make the bond between the school and the community to be strong (Gestiwicki, 2015). It is easy to believe that majority of the students in a school come from the surrounding community. Therefore, these students will be familiar with similar cultural practices. To ensure what they study in school is in tandem with cultural practices that they are familiar with, it is necessary to incorporate some of these practices in the programs and curriculum. This will act as a form of appreciation of the community the school operates in. For example, schools that are found in communities where most of the students are less-English-proficient can use the language used in this region in academic instruction. The trickle down effect of this is will be the enhanced commitment of the community to this school. The community will be very much willing to help the school and possibly bequeath the school with resources in the form of endowments or land.
Elsewhere, one short-term goal that can be crucial in the enactment of the policy statement is facilitating good relations with the young people. Young people form an important component of the schools. They enroll in schools to pursue an education and the activities of school administrators and teachers revolve around them. It is the role of school administrators in collaboration with staff to ensure that the young people relate well with them. All students should be provided with learning environments that are conducive. The young people enjoy more and grasp a lot when they are supported by their teachers and the school administrators. They require constant motivation and encouragement so as to perform optimally in their academics. The focus of every teacher should be to ensure that their students achieve good educational attainments. Moreover, teachers have the responsibility of supporting weak learners achieve academic parity with their peers who are quick learners. This is a short-term goal because they can easily be executed. Facilitating better relationships with young people is not a complex issue to do. It only requires goodwill from school administrators and the other staff. The Good progress of the young people enrolled in a school is an indication of the overall good performance of the educational facility (Crowson, 192). To achieve this overall good performance in the short-term, it is necessary the needs of the young are amicably met.
The long-term goal that is focused on inculcating several elements of the culture of the surrounding community in the school system program and the curriculum can be pursued because of several objectives. The goal is long-term because incorporation of cultural elements in the school curriculum and programs is something that will last long and is fraught with many challenges. The first objective of doing this is enabling the students to stay conversant with the cultural practices of their communities. The focus is the transmission of cultural practices to the younger generations ensuring that it does not become obscure and lose its significance. The second objective for the inculcation of cultural elements is affording the surrounding community pride and preserves their cultural practices. A school is where learning occurs, and hence advancement of the culture of the particular community will be achieved. The third objective is ensuring that the needs of students who have less proficiency in English have alternative languages that they are conversant with hence they are afforded with the chance to continue pursuing their education (Gestiwicki, 2015). The less-English-proficient students should not be locked out of the education system just because they are not conversant with English. The fourth objective for this goal is the advancement of multicultural education. This is of significance in schools laden with cultural diversity. Culturally diverse environments require respect of everyone’s cultural practices and language. It will be unfair to include elements of culture from one community when in reality the school has an immense cultural diversity. The best thing to do in such an environment is to include elements from all cultures represented to enhance the cohesiveness of the student groups.
The short-term goal of facilitating relationships with young people has several objectives it aims to deliver on. The first objective is to ensure the academic needs of the student are met. Secondly, the goal has been chosen because it will help the young to be innovative and aim at discovering what their strengths are and how they can leverage on this so as to become successful. This discovering involves identifying their abilities, gifts, and talents. This will help them have a purposeful life. The third objective is to ensure the overall success of the educational facility. In addition, the final objective is to ensure that the community reaps from the education of its young people through application what they study in school in solving problems that afflict the community.
The objectives of the long-term goal of inculcating elements of culture in the school system and the curriculum can be hiring teachers from the surrounding community who are conversant with the local language. The best starting point will be the inculcation of cultural elements in the curriculum for students in lower classes who will be keen on learning the new inclusions. For the second goal of facilitating relations with young people will require school administrators and teachers to develop close interpersonal relationships with them. Interpersonal relationships will be crucial in understanding the needs of the students and finding ways to solve them.
A policy statement is only valuable when it can be practically implemented. It requires the development of goals; these goals should have specific objectives. The applicability of the objectives is further examined by analyzing the most appropriate strategy that will be used to achieve. Furthermore, the strategy chosen should incorporate tactics that are essential to its working. All these steps have to be broken down in that order to ensure the practicality of the policy statement.
