Optimal Healing Environment Essay Samples
Healing is a conscious effort of improving health and as health care personnel, we are committed to this. In order to hasten and sustain healing, it is necessary to provide an optimal healing environment. This environment stimulates and supports healing. It has many components to it: internal environment, interpersonal environment, behavioral environment and external environment of the patient. Behavioral environment deals with patient’s lifestyle and its role in healing. Diet is a part of this environment.
Mediterranean diet can be beneficial to Americans in promoting health and preventing diseases. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains (mostly wheat), olive oil, beans, nuts, legumes, seeds, herbs and spices, form a major part of the diet and is taken daily. Fish and sea food are taken very often. It even has provision for taking a glass of red wine every day. Meat, poultry, eggs, yoghurt, cheese and other unhealthy fat intake is restricted to low proportions, once or twice a week. This diet can be applied to patients who are treated for CHD. It can also be recommended for patients with at high risk of CHD like those with obesity, diabetes and hypertension.
Thus Mediterranean diet with other component of healthy lifestyle can give a successful healing environment for heart diseases. It could also be beneficial in cancer, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s.
The above mentioned study was conducted at Mount Sinai Medical Centre, New York.
