Organizational Behavior (Part 1) Essay Example
Self-assessment is very crucial in one's bid to achieve self-growth and progress. Understanding yourself helps in providing guidance on the opportunities available for improvement and the threats because of that. Having comprehended this, I was taken to the task of assessing myself, and I learned much about myself. The self-assessment involved the identification of my Jungian typology, level of productivity, locus of control, burnout possibility and culminating with my stress scale. This discussion will describe my findings after conducting self-assessment and my hopes about to the benefits I expect to glean from the personal development plan, as well as the saliency of the plan to me.
I learned that my Jungian Typology was Introverted-Sensing after assessing myself. I come forth as a person who reflects before acting. Often, I spend time alone reflecting on things before doing time. In essence, I gain energy from reflecting and then I proceed to do any given action. This has saved me several embarrassing situations because doing acts without reflecting means that you are not prepared for the consequences such actions can have on you. Also, my perception of new information is based the capability of the information to be comprehended by five senses. Intrinsically, the information has to be concrete, tangible and present. On the same vein, I found that I make decisions out of the emotional impact they have on me: I empathize with situations (Spoto, 1995). Somewhat, my nature of making decisions has been loathed upon by those who believe that logic is prevalent to emotions.
Additionally, I learned that I possess an external locus of control. According to Hellriegel and Slocum (2010) individuals with an external locus of control believe that all that happens in life is pre-determined, and they have little or no control over it. It has helped me to have a positive attitude towards life because I believe that everybody has his luck and when things do not work out for me, my luck is building up somewhere else. However, this locus of control has made me reluctant in taking charge and responsibility of my actions. In spite of my lack of complaints, when I fail in something, I decry any attempts by a person to question my actions when I do something wrong as well.
Lastly, I discovered that my stress scale is moderate and experienced burnout. Using the Holmes and Rahe stress scale, my score ranged between 150 and 299, meaning that I stand a moderate risk of Inness as a result of stress (Rona, 2008). I train myself to ignore little things that can stress me up and concentrate on the major ones. Besides, I learned that I was experiencing burnout in many aspects. For instance, I used to be so passionate in sports when I was in high school. However, with the increased obligations and busy schedule in college, I lost the interest instead concentrated more on major dreams and goals.
In life, it is overly important to have dreams and goals, which a person works very hard each day to achieve them. Having goals means that one has some sense of direction in his life or career. However, the consequences of not having dreams and goals are detrimental. For instance, once if I surrender the course of my live to my parents or partner, or the course of my career to my organization, my co-workers or the boss, the risk of me not doing what I desire or not being where want is eminent. In fact, I will be working towards achieving the dreams of others instead of striving to attain the mine. I will be able to understand myself better and thus set realistic goals for myself by having a personal development plan. Subsequently, the compulsion to adhere to the goals and dreams will emerge.
What is more is that the personal development plan is a bold step in making progress in my personality? In the course of executing the personal development plan, I will identify my areas of weakness, as well as those of strength. With this, I will not have to worry about my weaknesses because my aim in life will be to capitalize on my strengths and trivialize my weaknesses. In essence, my self-esteem will be boosted, something that will make become more productive than otherwise. Several people encounter crises in their personalities and get lost in the dreams and goals of others. However, through the personal development plan, I will not fall victim to such shortcomings because I will have a sense of direction in my life and career, as well. Given what I have learned about myself, there is a pressing need for me to have a personal development plan in order to reduce the uncertainties in life and my career. In fact, the plan will aid me in predicting where I see myself in the future, maybe in the next five or ten years.
My expectations in regards to the gains I will derive from the personal development plan are hefty. On the first note, to a great extent, I will engage my thinking capability during the planning and development stage of the personal development plan. It is because many decisions need to be made before implementing a personal development plan in it’s entirely. As a result, my thinking capacity will be honed by the time the plan is executed successfully. Besides, the ability to stick to my dreams and goals garnered from the personal development plan will mean that my ability to make decisions that are wise will be enhanced. Bad decisions are made due to the failure to have ambitions and dreams in life or career and hence a person is swayed into making decisions based on the aspirations of others. The consequence is that you make a decision grounded on something you do not believe. The plan will obviate such setbacks, and my decision-making ability will be much sharper and quicker.
On the second note, I hope to be able to strike a balance in life through the personal development plan. Careers often take up most of the time of working class people. For instance, some people for long hours so as to earn more at the expense of other ambitions in their lives. The cliché saying maintains that too much work makes Jack a dull boy. Indeed, the consequences of being hyper-aware of some ambitions as compared to others are detrimental. A balance between work and play has to be attained. The personal development plan will aid in giving the same weight to goals without compromising others. I believe that the plan will help me to devote my time to my career and other things properly, such as family and friends. I foresee a situation where the insights gained from the personal development plan will help me save my marriage because of my over-ambitious nature. It means that I would have devoted much time to my career and neglects the importance of my marriage.
On the third note, the personal development plan will assist me in becoming a more responsible person in life. I hope that through the plan, I will be able to adopt a culture of sticking to my goals and dreams throughout my career and life. As a result, I will be devoted to executing my career ambitions and social goals without being distracted by the underlying difficulties and discomfort. In addition, the plan insights learned from the plan will facilitate the development of a positive attitude towards life. Often, professionals experience dissatisfaction in their careers and lives, which is attributed to have dreams to the failure and ambitions in their lives. For those who have them, they fail to strike a balance the result of which is damaging. Withal, personal development plans instill the understanding that, as humans, we have a dark and bright side. We can never achieve our ambitions and dreams instantly; rather, it is a gradual process that needs patience and dedication.
