Carlos Schwantes in his interpretive history of the Pacific Northwest termed the region as a ‘hinterland'. According to Schwantes, the meaning of the term was that, the area was so remote but could be a potential source to the economies. He said that the region's development lack the earliest form of transportation. He commented that Spain in 1774 showed little interest in the region, which seemed so pitifully lacking in economic resources or safe harbors. The Spanish interest initially focused on its economic potential and prospective harbors. They rather, secured the coastline region as a buffer zone between possible Russian colonies to the north and imperial activity in Mexico.
Economic development in the area came to the area as a result of colonialism. The British showed no interest, but they sooner discovered almost by accident the economic value of the sea. They went back to the Northwest coast to carry out more trading and exploring. The British sent twenty-five vessels in the year 1774 and started looking out for economic resources and safe harbors, which became the initial exposure of the Pacific Northwest.
The current Pacific Northwest does not fit the hinterland model since it has advanced in developments. The developments among others are the rapid change in business model, change in technology, and the early use of computer software. The region is currently rich in resources such as minerals, the access point for other economies and also, rich in manpower. It now operates as a sovereign state that can raise revenues for itself through taxation and trade. The perspective that people saw it in the eighteenth century has positively changed, and they now wish to carry out a business with it, or go and invest there.
