INTRODUCTION: Shifting to college life and writing papers for college is quite a different experience in itself. Here it comes down to serious, academic writing on the part of the student, with the additional requirement of being formal and using ideas and subject matter that is much mature and scholarly in nature. The effort on the part of the students sums down to a few major points that involve reading and employing logical thinking in written work. Many students also feel that their work is checked with much strictness and their professors might not take their work in the way they have presented to them. This difference in the writing and the writing process is a crucial one for the student.
CRITICAL APPROACH TO WRITING: College students firstly need to start shaping their thoughts on how to approach any given topic or assignment and begin to study their work with a deeper, more well-thought-out approach to writing. It is difficult for beginners, since they have not been coached earlier on how to go about writing proper academic texts and hence they have to double-check whatever they have written in order to produce an ‘academic’ text that proves them college-worthy. The effort is much praiseworthy, however, there arises the issue that the student sometimes, does not just analyze but merely does a little reading on part of the assignment given and reproduces the aspects if that very reading on to paper using flaunting language and fancy vocabulary.
USE OF ACADEMIC VOCABULARY AND PRECISION OF LOGIC:
One of the main rules of academic writing is restricting oneself to the use of highly sophisticated, strictly academic and mature language which is to reproduce in the many assignments that students get over the year. The other is avoiding the use of ideas, subject matter and context of the paper that will prove illogical, immature and irrelevant as opposed to the expected writing style. College professors often oppose students over their un-academic ways of writing papers which leads to earning a low grade in assessments. So there remains a constant battle in the mind of the student to urge oneself into improving their writing and meeting the standards of their professors.
FOLLOWING THE TECHNIQUES OF FORMATTING AN ACADEMIC PAPER:
The most important aspect of academic writing followed by writing style is formatting an academic paper. College students are forced to write in professional academic styles such as APA, MLA, Harvard, Turabian or Chicago styles depending on the requirement of their colleges or professor’s instructions. These are often hard to follow by some students especially when it comes down to the fundamentals such as in-text citations, references or citing works and many get confused on how to format their papers. This often makes the writing experience a dull and difficult one for the students, and they find it quite a burden since not everyone is too fond of writing.
CONCLUSION: Earning a college degree does mean serious business especially if the basic requirement of getting that degree is through extensive, well-written writing done by the student. It must be the duty of the instructor or the professor to guide the student on how to write. They can make the students read academic writings, give a proper comprehensive explanation and exercises on the various formats so that students live up to the expectations of their professors.
