For the full development of personality people need to communicate with other people. Otherwise, the social norms and values established in the society will not be perceived or will be perceived incorrectly.
People, who act themselves unjustly, often seek to ensure that the others will follow their example, as they feel better, knowing that others also commit wrong deeds. Unfortunately, those who strive to live righteously, sometimes appear to be under the influence of such people. This pressure is particularly strong in childhood and adolescence, when a person is experiencing a huge demand for recognition by his peers. And for people who seek to maintain a high level of morality in spite of the words and actions of others the right thing to do is to keep away.
Peer pressure, both positive and negative, plays an important role in the development and emotional growth of adolescents and young adults. In addition, it has a direct impact on the relationships at school. When we talk about peer pressure, particularly among adolescents, we often do this in a negative sense. However, this effect can become a strong positive factor if we are able to pay our attention on positive results that peer pressure brings.
In the school environment peer pressure can be devastating, but it can also create a class spirit of unity and cooperation. Negative impact occurs when a person makes an unhealthy, harmful choice and begins to put pressure on the other, to win them over to his side. Cheating, disrespect for people, irresponsibility, lies, intimidation of others these are just a few examples of such actions.
But from the other hand there are plenty of positive sides that appear due to peer pressure. For example, when the class is full of honored students each of them has very strong motivation to saving or promoting his position in the class. This motivation influences student’s will to do his best in studies, to obey the rules, and to follow the most beneficial ways of activity.
So basically what we are talking here is about the fact that the major thing that influences whether peer pressure will be positive or negative is the environment that surrounds you. There is a good proverb that says: show me your friend, and I will tell you who you are. This is why the quality of the peer pressure depends on the peer itself.
In a democratic society individual rights are sacred. The group allows a person to build a correct self-esteem, because only with the help of side view can correctly perceive and evaluate them.
The influence of the group does not end on an assessment of the individual; it can help to change, to remove the negative qualities, and to develop positive. Group responds to changes in the person, and with the help of feedback and society’s reaction the person may obtain information about the correct direction of his development.
Society is not a homogeneous mass, it includes people of different levels of development, having different knowledge and skills. Communicating with a group, a person is able to communicate with those with whom he can learn something new and useful for him. Communication with those who are more advanced, makes catch up to the higher level, sets a higher standard than the one that is at singles, and a person in the group strives for the best because he knows that there is the best. The value of peer pressure is precisely that it may give the necessary positive emotions, positive feedback that encourages further development of man in the selected direction.
