Movie review: Persepolis

The film is shot like a story connected to the memories of a little girl. It tells about Islamic revolution of 1979 in the period of Ayatollah Khomeini’s ruling. The revolution leader is presented as a dictator. As a result of the revolution he makes new political, social and cultural reorganizations that set strict Islamic rules and restrictions against the influence of Western lifestyle.
At first the population of Iran considers the Islamic Revolution as a source of freedom and democratic rule, listens to the government’s promises about brighter future, but in conclusion their expectations do not come true. Moreover, the war absolutely ruins their customary life, hopes, and confidence to politicians. It is obvious that the current government reacted negatively to the film in order the historic rulers not to lose their authority and maybe to justify their actions by certain historical circumstances.
The martyrdom is presented as an integral part of the religion and the victory in the war. There is even a phrase in the film that if dying as a martyr, it gives the person to the benefit of the community. The government even promises the plastic key to the paradise door for those who die in the war.
The religion plays a great but not dominating role in Marjane’s life. In her childhood she communicates with God in her imagination, believes in His omnipotence, and wants to become a prophet. A primary source of identity formation for Marjane is her relatives, especially her grandmother. According to their religion and social rules the Islamic veil is the synonym of freedom. Thus, Marjane asserts her rights and freedoms in public.
This film is very realistic and makes people think about Islamic culture.
