There are few worse offenses in the professional world that don’t involve criminal action when it comes to such a thing as plagiarism. Not only is it the theft of someone else’s ideas, thoughts, words, and hard work, it is also an admission to lack of imagination and creativity. Some see it as an easy way out of an particularly difficult assignment, others might see it as an unfortunately necessary means to an end, but overall it is a truly disastrous method by which to suicide a career. Plagiarism is, essentially, the last act of desperation taken by those who cannot think for themselves.
Over the course of television history there have been untold numbers of those who would dare to plagiarize the ideas of others, and CNN host Fareed Zakaria is no exception. In 2012 Zakaria was suspended from CNN for a column he wrote titled “The Case for Gun Control”, a piece that took heavily, and without attribution, from New York Times columnist Jill Lepore. (Collins, 2012) While Zekaria is still able to retain his position, his reputation has been tarnished by this act and will likely be remembered by those who pay close attention to the program.
Plagiarism is a serious blight upon the professional community and a serious matter to be taken into account within the collegiate sector. It can ruin careers, cause mistrust to grow, and can even cause students and employees alike to be removed from their position. There is little to no excuse for such a thing, particularly since there are so many warnings and instructional devices to steer people away from them.
