It is inevitable that several policies are imposed on the use of tobacco in order to aim at reducing disability, disease, and death related to smoking of tobacco. The policies need to portray a comprehensive approach, that is, an approach which includes clinical, economic, regulatory, social, and educational strategies established as the most effective way to eradicate the negative health and economic effects of using tobacco (Bearman, Neckerman & Wright, 2011). The policies would include:
Policy to restrict the sale and distribution of smokeless tobacco and cigarettes in order to protect children and adolescents. Such a policy asserts jurisdiction over tobacco products, by restricting the sale and distribution of smokeless tobacco and cigarettes to protect the youths. The youths tend to be largely of a minor category, and the ability to make a rational decision over consumption of substances like tobacco would not be left to them persie but protected against such access and usage.
The policy on comprehensive smoking education. This policy would institute several rotating health warning labels on cigarette advertisements and packages (World Health Organization & Tobacco Free Initiative (World Health Organization, 2007). This would ensure awareness is spread across on the harmful effects of consuming tobacco products. Therefore, anyone using tobacco products is adequately informed of the side effects of such acts.
Policy to restrict tobacco product marketing and advertising. The advertisement and marketing of the products of tobacco is an avenue on which the use of tobacco products gain momentum. Bearman, Neckerman & Wright (2011), argue that imposing legal restrictions on such ads and marketing would ensure that appeal messages on the usage of tobacco products are not far-reaching or rather not spread at all. This would limit the platform at which the advertisements and marketing strategies appeal to the population thereby limiting its consumption.
Policy on prohibition of smoking in restaurants and bars, private workplaces, and government buildings. The prohibition of smoking in such public places is essential as to protect the non-users of the tobacco products from the effects that arise from the tobacco being smoked nearby. This calls for assigning designated smoking terminals which are free from public use.
