Family Assets and Child Outcomes: Evidence and Directions
Introduction
One of possible effects of assets is that assets may provide a family with a Cushion. Cushion is the softening effect of assets. One more effect of assets is a possible reducing of parental stress (Michal, Trina and Sondra, 2014). Assets may also help parents to invest in their children that would help children in future with work and in life. No assets – no investments. Michael Sherraden also suggested that “assets change attitudes, creating an orientation toward the future”(Sherraden, 2014). Some early studies discovered that profit from investments and assets effects the results of the children at the test, as well as the presence of the homeownership.
Evaluation of the programs launched
ADD program was the first one launched in the USA. This program proved the importance of the individual development accounts in supporting short-term savings. One more program called Community Advantage Program was initiated in 1998 that was designated to make homeownership available to LMI households. The author also draws attention to the importance of the accounts for the long term savings for children but unfortunately, for the parents with low-income first needs are of the utmost importance. Modest saving level is also expected in the groups participating in the MI SEED. The author is of the opinion that the better program the higher chance that it would improve the positive effects of the participation (Michal, Trina and Sondra, 2014). Some reports suggest that the participation in the CDA in future would improve social development of children and their emotional state. Due to the reports mentioned in the article and different approaches and ideas it is still goes without saying that governmental programs really helps children in their development through education and higher education.
Conclusion
That is why government shall create new programs and support the old ones because it really helps to families with low-incomes to survive and sometimes to enter the university. And one shall never forget the importance of the presence of assets in the family because everyday fighting with stress imposes bad psychological effect at parents and children as well. And the last but not the least is the importance of the long term savings. It is really difficult for a government to create such a long-term saving for families but some new projects may be initiated. For example the government may create accounts for the educational purposes of children so that any graduate know that if he had good results at school, he would be able to receive some additional money for education.
