Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Essay Examples
The introduction begins when Freud describes suffering that is persistent in the lives of certain individuals. He claims that such suffering is brought about by terrifying experiences of nightmares and catastrophic events that repeatedly occur to certain people who have already gone through them. Repetition of such calamities leads to a person undergoing trauma, “A wound that is not inflicted on the body but on the mind”.
Psychiatry, neurobiology, and psychoanalysis term post-traumatic stress disorder as an experience of catastrophic events in which its response to victims occurs in uncontrolled, repetitive appearance of hallucinations and other disturbing phenomena. In the book, “Beyond the pleasure Principle”, Freud tries to compare the reliving of a battle, to a nightmare of an accident. He further states that dreams occurring in traumatic neuroses possess the characteristics that bring the patient to the situation of a disaster. Anyone who accepts it as something self-evident is put back into the situation that made them undergo post-traumatic stress disorder at night.
The return of the trauma experience in a dream is not an indication of a direct experience but an attempt to overcome the fact that it was not real. Such dreams bring a situation whereby the patient wakes up in another fright which is an experience of wakening into consciousness that can be identified with reliving the trauma.
Occurrence of trauma
It is a category of damage that happens after a series of events in the lives of individuals. First, we experience it as a “hit” then a disruption occurs that will be felt as pain that breaks us down later resulting to mourning. In the aftermath of trauma, victims hide in an attempt to cover up the wound and deny that anything happened. Depending on the strength of desire for truth, the victim mourns and appreciates the fact that they must be different and accept the burden of change. When the accumulation of historical trauma gets to a critical point, the problem of who we are is exposed, and we get depressed. When such experiences happen, there is an occurrence of double collapse. When the outside world comes to know of our problems, we feel ashamed not wanting to be helped. An example is given of Hiroshima after the bombing during the second world war that so it rebuild after being brought down. It took several processes to come to terms with what had happened but if finally overcame the trauma.
Method of disaster research
Study of research is different and people who are well-trained and with experience in survey research can acknowledge this fact. The difference does not lie in the knowledge of the subject but the circumstances in which conventional methods are applied. The research, therefore, requires two types of training: training in research methods as a whole and how the circumstances surrounding the disaster affect application of these methods.
There are two types of studies that are: the descriptive and explanatory that tries to join the field and laboratory work as far as study of research is concerned. Methods used in the study of early disasters are different from modern methods because there is a change in technology. Early methods included the use of the army, but with the development of technology, there are specialists in every type of emergency who can deal with the situation.
