Professional Goals Essay Examples

Section 1

My professional goals in relation to education, teaching, and learning are to include education in culture but not to include culture in education. Culture is something we all want to embrace but since times are changing, education is helping shine some light on the issue. I would like students to embrace a culture when learning. This will help them understand where they are from and the different things that happen in their surroundings. It is important to embrace a culture, but education should always come first. This is something that is not being practiced a lot and would like it to be my number one goal.

Section 2

Material culture
This is the physical evidence of culture. There are different ways of showing and symbolizing a culture (Johnston, 1980). Some of these materials are found in museums because they are no longer used but still play an important role in a culture. I visited a museum in our country and found out that the calabash is an important material in the African culture. Although most Africans do not use the calabash now, they respect it because it is a sign that there is food to feed everyone. This concept is important because it will help people understand the values of culture and uphold them for as long as they live. They will be learned but will also preserve their culture. This concept is applicable to me and other people by visiting various cultural centers and learning more. The information will later be elaborated in class.

Hidden curriculum

There are many things that students learn in school yet they are not taught or written anywhere. They are unofficial and no one intends on learning them but find themselves having learned them. I like it when people embrace a culture (Hidden Curriculum, 2014). These lessons are good for all students because they have to understand the world they are living in today. In my professional goals, I have helped students understand these lessons they have learned them outside the classroom in order to create a deeper understanding. This concept will be applicable at all times because people will still be learning when not in classroom. I will come up with a book from all the information that I will collect from the students so that they can learn and understand and avoid confusion (Anyon, 1980).

Culture as Disability

Culture has its weaknesses. There are some cultural concepts that are hard to understand. Some of the things depicted in culture do not match our real life (McDermott, & Varenne, 1995). This is a difficult topic because students will like to have answers to such questions, but I do not know how to respond to them. For instance I came across a saying "If a blind Man should affirm, that there is no such Thing as Light, and an Owl no such thing as Darkness, it would be hard to say, which the verier Owl of the two is." It will be a tough one but having set goals I will definitely come through. This is a concept that I will apply in order for students to understand that culture has its shortcomings. It cannot be embraced fully and all the shortcomings but be dealt with accordingly. Students will learn that it is their duty to only and practice what is accepted today. Disability will also be shade some light on.
