Pros And Cons Of Abortion Essay Example
Abortion is one of the controversial topics in various disciplines. Some argue that it ought to be legal while others oppose such a stand. From whichever perspective one views it, there are some advantages and disadvantages of abortion. The following are the pros and cones of abortion.
There are various advantages of abortion. According to Jason Ladock (n.d), sometimes abortion is the only option to save the life of the mother. Pregnancy may cause serious threats to the life of the mother necessitating the procurement of abortion. In addition, a pregnancy resulting from rape or incest may pose an emotional threat to the mother and even the baby once born. It is immoral to allow such to happen given that there are viable options avoiding such. Moreover, during the first trimester when it is best to procure abortion, the child depends on the mother entirely and hence cannot be a separate entity to the mothers. Therefore, any decision made is attributed to the mother other than the child.
On the contrary, abortion has various disadvantages. Life begins at conception, and hence procuring an abortion is tantamount to murder. Therefore, any society allowing abortion allows murder that is against ethical considerations. Utilitarianism argues that an action ought to lead to the greater good of the majority (Kay D. C., 1997). In this respect, such does not hold in the event of abortion as the child does not have its right to happiness. Further, there are other options other than abortion in the event of accidental or rape pregnancy. There are couples ready to adopt such a child. Abortion poses a danger of future complications if the mother, such as ectopic pregnancies and pelvic inflammatory diseases. Therefore, it is wrong and unnecessary.
