The objective of the study is motivated by European Commission Lisbon strategy that is involved in stimulating economic growth and employment in an attempt to make Europe the most competitive economy in the world. Our research question will be; “what is the economic impact of language and cultural barriers on trade?” (European Commission, 2005). The study is also interested in establishing if there is a correlation between the size of the company and the language and cultural barriers.
The respondents of the study were small and medium-sized enterprises sampled from 29 countries in the European Union. The study considers many different languages, given the multilingual nature of the European Union. It was of interest to observe how the competence of these SME’s in the languages of export destination influenced the decision by the enterprise to export or not (European Commission, 2005).
Among the variables of interest was to establish whether the company had lost an opportunity of securing an export contract because of deficiencies in foreign language skills. In the analysis of the response to this question, the mean responses for a particular country are calculated at a certain level of significance. Significance levels give the degree of the accuracy to which any analysis has been limited. In most cases, the significance level is set at 0.05 which is equivalent to 95% confidence level. The reason for use of 0.05 significance level is so that we do not reject a true null hypothesis in the case of a strict criterion 99% confidence interval and at the same time we do not accept a false null hypothesis in the case of a loose criterion 90% (Gupta, 1999).
The analysis established that English was the most commonly used language, even though there was a greater demand for skills in other languages. From analysis of the correlation between language skills and export performance, it was established that possession of language strategy, recruitment of staff who have language skills and use of translators were among the factors that led to successful export performance (European Commission, 2005).
