Introduction to security
The news article by Paul Harris talks about the plans to upgrade school security by Washoe County School District. This action has been motivated by the unfortunate incident that occurred in Sandy Hook School. WCSD are focusing their security upgrade on layers of security that increases the time that an intruder can take to get to the students. In matters of security, buying some time can save lives. The schools are putting up locks from inside and blinds to darken classrooms (Paul, 2015). Locks from the inside can be used to delay entry into the classroom when need be. Darkening the classroom will make it hard for an intruder to site his target, buying the students more time till the authorities come, or giving them time to take cover. However, the cost of upgrading security is very high hence there’s an appeal for funding.
The news article closely relates to the course content in chapter 10, with a focus on institutional security in schools. The section gives examples of the many school insecurity incidents in the US and elsewhere. The chapter underscores the importance of enhanced security in institutions. Threats in learning institutions originate from insiders and outsiders. There are various policies and measures that have been taken to improve security in schools. These range from, putting up chain link fences, using police officers as resource persons in schools, establishment of safe school zones, monitoring students’ emotional health and possible criminal records, profiling prospective employees among others. WCSD is on the right path; however, they might need to do much more than putting locks and blinds.
