Carol Dweck: The power of believing that you can improve
I have watched quite a few videos for this assignment and have made up my mind on “The power of believing that you can improve” by Carol Dweck. The video tells about the approach towards education and its main goal, and, I would say, its main mistake. Professor Dweck explained in a very simple and comprehensive manner what the main drawback of our education is, or better to say, what wrong our parents did when raising us and how the educational system made things worse. In my opinion, this case is applicable to 90% of families.
What I definitely liked about the video is that it is not aimed at parents and teachers only. It gives a person an opportunity to apply the tips Professor Dweck gave us in our daily routine. Indeed, when we are doing our home work for college, working on a big project at work, or building our relationships, we should enjoy the process, and not just rush things up for a certain result. Just think about it: what if we evaluated the negative results we had got in the past as “not yet” or “not out time”. It would make our lives so much brighter since we enjoyed the process, not the result. The video proves this theory with concrete examples and successes professor Dweck experienced while testing her theory.
What I slightly disliked about the video is that the slides she used were not informative at all, and I think she would perform better without them. If those slides had been necessary, she could have added the statistics in tables, bars, and graphs which would make it easier for the audience to visualize the information. All in all, the remarks are mostly technical and do not concern the content of the speech.
As for me, I have enjoyed the presentation and will totally try this theory in the real life. In my opinion, the more people pay attention to the process and simply enjoy it, the more they will enjoy the whole thing and bring their own performance on a brand new level.
