Tinkering Towards Utopia refers to the reality of reforming public schools education and the lessons drawn from the 100 years history of the United States. The book offers two vital insights, which are the role of good schools in raising a society that is autonomous and prosperous, as well as the political will.
The theme of Tinkering Towards Utopia is the failure of education transformation to renovate schools. It talks about elements of a story where the failed change is the main logo (Koschmann, 1997). However, the story presents a wider range of themes, which start with the beginning of 20th century education reform movement in America and widens through the relations of the story with schools, and ends without improving the schools.
I believe that education can undergo the type of changes that came by due to technological advancement along with scientific innovations in disciplines such as medicine, engineering and many others. Although the author presents his analysis, what is implied is that discerns of any technology leading to any significant reform in the educational institutions appear to be draw a terrible reception, or rather we are in the wrong direction of education reform.
If the two words, reform, and change are compared, it is clear that they are not synonymous. The author confirmed my understanding that the approaches for better education framework and structure are, in fact, distinctly unwelcoming for greater change originating from organized efforts that compel a particular kind of a new education transformation. On the other hand, a few changes, especially the most significant ones are effected social culture, which came about by rapid progress experienced in that field and not by organized design (Dennett, 1994). For instance, the idea of learning disability came to schools through a more parallel approach to the way culture is invaded by memes than to the performance of an education reform association.
Good examples that seem close to my focus here can be located in the unplanned effects of home computers on the classroom. Cuban (1992) article about computers in classrooms is a reference to the resistance schemes of schools besides the reform that is brought into classrooms by PCs. Schools have a less impact on what students engage in with computers when compared in their homes. As the number of computers reaches certain critical stages, we start to observe changes in the connection between tutors and learners that come about due to reform and the fact that learners have been able to get new types of sophistication about computers as well as about methods to learn and study (Cuban, 1992).
Although I appreciate the enlightenment methods by which the technique brought about by Tinkering Towards Utopia scientifically upsets reform without having the duty to defend my personal intellectual commitments, it is possible to learn from the book as the change from a stance of reform to a stance of fruition, which does not exclude active participations. However, the task of change appears less. The book seems to be a source of insights into the dynamic of resistance mechanisms of schools.
Nonetheless, there is a sense of outstanding anguish that can last until we can prepare another admiration where the book states less than what we first thought. The mechanisms explained in the book appear to be parallels rather than causes of school's stability. Thus this difference results in suggestions that the author is blinded to explanations, which seem to be extremely into the sociological practices that are active in education while treating as a black box the real contents of what is being taught.
