The use of reinforcement’s strategies that advertisers use to modify one’s behavior to purchase a product is used through positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, punishment, or extinction to motivate you to buy the product. The paper will examine four different advertisements of each strategic method and dissect the nature of the ad and how behavior modification or reinforcement theory was used to persuade the consumer to purchase the product or service that is advertised.
The first ad that I came across was a Michelin tire ad, with the typical logo of the tire man on one side and a baby sitting in the middle of a tire. The product that the company is trying to sell is obviously tires. The positive reinforcement that is used is through the picture and the statement “Michelin. Because so much is riding on your tires.” Clearly stating that their tires are best for the protection of you most precious cargo is the reinforcement theory that is urging the consumer to choose the Michelin brand tires (Inspector Insight, 2013).
The second ad is one that uses negative reinforcement to encourage the get the consumer to buy into its product. The ad is for Porn Hub and has two senior citizens sitting next to each other looking bored and unsatisfied. The old man is sitting bundled up looking frustrated with his hands between his legs, and the old woman is also in winter clothes with ear muffs on and her hands in her pocket. The ad is trying to insinuate that if they were watching Porn Hub, that they might not be looking like that. The point is, to encourage the consumer to watch the videos on placed on the web by their company unless you want to end up like the two old people in the picture (Luckerson, 2014).
The third ad was a commercial for Doritos that used punishment as the method for encouraging purchasing their chips. The scene shows a man who had electrodes stuck to his temples and as he eats the Doritos he is shocked by the ‘scientists.’ Then the commercial shows various methods of discouraging the man to stop eating the Doritos through various punishments but nothing works (YouTube, 2013).
The last ad campaign that is using a negative reinforcement strategy of extinction is the CDC’s campaign against smoking. The ad shows several unhealthy individuals who are suffering become of their smoking habit, which is aimed to discourage the consumers from continuing their smoking habits, before the quality of their life becomes extinct (Rivas, 2014).
