This article is about security management. Security management involves the development and implementation of security of policies and procedures that can protect all assets of an organization. These assets include information assets. All assets must first be identified for proper security management to occur. During security management, most organization use security management procedures. These procedures include risk assessment and analysis, collation and classification of information with the aim of discovering vulnerabilities and planning control methods (Oitmeier, 2012). Security management utilizes the principle of risk management to manage threats. It identifies the existing threats and examines the capacity of the prevailing controls. It also explores the extent of impact that may arise due to lapses in security controls. Management prioritizes various risks and rates them on the basis of the magnitude of impact. Apart from classification, security management also involves choosing the right option towards risk mitigation. Security threats are both external and internal. External security threats include regulation, suppliers, disasters and legal requirements (Oitmeier, 2012). Internal threats include systems and processes, employees and equipment and changes in the internal systems of the organization.
