Report On Sexism And God Talk
The book Sexism and God Talk presents a strong argument for religion’s role in the hindrance of a woman’s value in the context of humanity. Author, Rosemary Ruether provides evidence of the lack of focus on the female position in theology that has only added to sexism that has existed against women in the world. The inferences made in the book may occur as controversial and offensive to many fundamental Christians. The author’s goal creates a feminist theology in the face of one of the difficult religious debate.
Monotheistic religions, such as Judaism and Christianity have used the placed the woman in an unfavorable light. Importance of life was on God, who is a man. “The female has been reduced to the human partner as servant to God” (Ruether, 1983). The shift in the attitude towards woman in religious scripture is eluded to have occurred after the rise of Greco-Roman Christianity. Prior to that time, according to the book, Ruether provides several examples symbolically holding the female side in equal accord with the male, hence woman were included equally in importance in original religious law.
The overall message of the author to the world was the problems that the patriarchal importance of the male God, has created for a woman’s worth and value. If people believe that God does not hold a woman in high regard, how can woman truly be respected and given equality in this world. The book was extremely insightful and thought provoking and worth taking the time to broaden one’s viewpoint on religion and sexism.
