Overpopulation is one of the most undesirable situations where the number of people that exist in a certain community goes beyond the Earth’s carrying capacity. There are several factors attributed to the causes of overpopulation. This includes an increase in birth rate relative to poverty; a reduced mortality rate; and an increased rate of immigration.
Increased in birth rate is the major factor that causes overpopulation. Families that have gone through natural disasters or poverty need more hands to help in the survival of all the rest of the members. These children tend to consume resources and survive with insufficient amount of resources. The reduction in mortality rate happens when birth rate exceeds death rate. Moreover, reduced mortality rate is brought about by better medical services. The increasing development in technology has saved more lives through the use of more advanced equipment. On the other hand, immigration happens when people from one country decide to move to another country for greener pastures. When people opt to stay in the country that offers greater opportunities and resources, in due course, competition also increases.
At present, Canada is confronted with the same challenge of overpopulation. In the twentieth century, the country’s population has increased six-folds. One of the defining factors to the increasing in population in Canada is the country’s pride for its huge land mass. Unexpectedly, the land mass in Canada is mostly barren and does not have the ability to support a huge population. The east coast is losing most of its fisheries while the salmon in the west coast is also beginning to deplete. The country’s boreal forest is in trouble from fire, disease, and exploitation. The great demand of exponential growth may result to complete depletion of Canada in a matter of a decade or even two decades. Overpopulation may lead to soil degradation, environmental degradation, and water pollution.
