Discussion

Disaster is a devastating event that will challenge every victim’s spiritual belief. However, the diversity of spiritual beliefs may arise between individuals, the affected communities, and the healthcare providers who respond after the disaster happened. Any disaster or catastrophic event creates a unique circumstance, which requires responses in order to be relief. Spiritual belief is one of the responses that are being created, which also creates issues during and after the disaster.
Varghese (2010) suggests that spirituality helps disaster victims to cope. Spiritual belief of every person varies on the religion they belong to, which is one of the issues that arise during or after the disaster, whether or not it is a mad-made one. An individual’s spirituality also affects his perception towards humanity. Therefore, one’s belief as to why the disaster happened may be different from another in terms of spirituality. The diverse belief creates a community of different spirituality, which can be another issue for healthcare providers. However, a community health nurse can provide their spiritual assistance to the victims of disasters by not being biased in terms of their own spirituality. They are not asked to have the same spiritual belief, but nurses must assist the victims in terms of providing emotional support in addition to the healthcare assistance. Conversely, in order for nurses to assist the victims, they must be able to assist their own spiritual care in order to provide the same spiritual care to the individual community as well as their colleagues. Additionally, nurses must also understand that within a community, spirituality has different definitions based on the person’s opinions and worldviews (Rieg, Mason, & Preston, 2006).
Therefore, nurses will be able to provide a better healthcare assistance if (1) they are spiritually ready and (2) understand the different interpretations of spirituality of various people.
