The World Health Organization (WHO) defines public health as organized measures (both in public or private) to avert diseases. It upholds the significance of a healthy lifestyle and sustenance of long life among the population as a whole. Promoting public health requires focus upon the total system and is not limited to eradication of a particular disease. Addressing the demands of public health includes assessment and monitoring of the health of communities and populations; formulating public policies to cater to the local and national health problems, and ensuring population’s access to affordable health care (as cited in WHO, 2015).
It is the responsibility of the US government both at the local and federal level to identify region specific health priorities and fulfill them. The Americans have faltered several times in gaining access to adequate healthcare in the states. It is up to the government authorities to raise awareness about proper vaccinations among population or suggest ways to tackle an epidemic. Local and state authorities should ensure facilities of clean drinking water and launch 24 hours support in cases of emergency. At the federal level, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) works round-the-clock via the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Equipped with up-to-the-minute technological facilities, it functions as a platform for disease control through vaccination programs. From children to pregnant women, CDC also acts in accordance with individual requirements that are gender-based or age specific (as cited in CDC, 2014).
There are other federal agencies like The Environment Protection Agency (EPA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) that play integral part in support of a disease-free society. However, owing to a high influx of immigrants in the US and the persistent racism inherent to the American society; equalizing public healthcare is now a challenge that needs to be conquered.
