Ursula Biemann’s essay “Performing the Border” reflects on two nations at the US and Mexican border town and how those people are controlled by their employers and become transcended.
This peculiar place is called “simulated” and nothing in it reminds us of society, in which we are used to living. For me, finding out that an individual is responsible for a spontaneous creation of society, is an entirely new concept. According to the author, this concept exists there and it is not a vision of the future. However, the town under question struggles to ensure running of social services. Moreover, the border represents the darkest images of the Western computerized future, invented by computer geeks up in the North. The high-tech town brings about the gender issue as well. It is about female bodies and how viciously they are perceived by their employees. Not only hard work, but also sex industry created by maquila is open for those unfortunate women. The young women constitute the majority of labor. Their life is miserable because they have no personal freedom and opportunities for the future. Their task is to manually produce the instruments at factories for consumption at the north. From the essay, I learned that the cruel attitude to these young women have brought along dehumanization of the whole female body. Their bodies are seen as only components. Females have lost their identity and are treated as subjects. A female is an instrument that will get replaced by another sooner or later. The networking system profiles each individual to control their bodies. To my mind, this can be attributed to cyber-slavery, in which different extremes are normalcy. This is also one example of how technological processes when viciously controlled can bring about unimagined harm.
“Black Sea Files” consist of videos that fragment the local people in their fight for living next to the oil pipeline. I am impressed by the grand job of filming that took up two years and involved many obstacles. The essay presents a good insight into the lives of locals and shows their mutual relations. The accompanying files are meant to discover the reality behind the key players in the region, who regularly neglect the local farmers and migrants. This piece of writing accounts for three trips to regions of the Black Sea. Again, the author looks at money and sexualized female labor. Often, the presented images are strikingly dramatic, but they are taken from real life. In these dangerous regions she was filming the rules are different than in the rest of Europe. As a woman, she was taking a great risk when entering the remote areas without press pass to show us the brutal reality that exists there.
Ursula Biemann is a remarkable artist who often challenges herself with difficult filming fields. Her message in videos and texts is comprehensible to the audience and she is not afraid of covering hot political and economic topics.
