In my facility, we have a good tested and working system for the prevention of exposure to chemotherapy. We use pharmacy prime chemo tubing with normal saline. Chemotherapy medicine is put in into a plastic bag that goes down in a yellow container. Medication is delivered to the floor. In the patient's room, chemotherapy signs are put on top of bed and bathroom to alert staff and the patient's family that chemotherapy is in process. We use PPE at all times. Once the yellow container is filled to three quarters, it is stored in a dirty utility storage room. Waste is stored in a bag, and then put in a hard container which is labeled as “chemotherapy waste”. I use a chemotherapy gown with double gloves when issuing the chemotherapy drugs. There are good policies made using ONS guidelines, which are reviewed annually. Everyone who works in the chemotherapy is supposed to take this short course every year for their safety.
Patients and their families are also given advice on how to prevent themselves from exposure to the chemotherapy drugs. For the patients, we usually help them on the proper way that they can get rid of their waste entirely and lessen the effect of infecting others. In service is done to train staff including housekeeping for possible exposure to chemo. Family is instructed not to use patient's toilet for 48 hours after chemo. Patients are instructed to put the seat down while flushing toilet and to flush the toilet twice. If they get any spills on the shirt, I advise them that they need to double wash the clothes. For patients who go home with continuous infusion, I show them how to use the spill kit properly. They are always given the spill kit while leaving the hospital to take it with them.
