Adaptation entails a process whereby thinking and feeling persons use conscious awareness to develop integration between their environment and human perception. According to Roy’s Adaptation Model, an adaptive system is a system that is capable of responding to diverse external and internal stimuli (Shosha, & Kalaldeh, 2012). As such, an individual’s coping ability is capable of enabling them to develop responses to any changes within the environment.
Ordin, Karayurt, and Wellard (2013) used the Roy’s Adaptation Model to investigate the process of adaptation after the liver has been transplanted. In their study, they explored the adaptation process of patient’s that underwent liver transplantation in Turkey. The choice of their study was motivated by the increased adoption of Liver transplantation as the preferred choice for treating patients suffering from terminal liver diseases. Their study provided critical information concerning the adaptive behavior of patients that underwent liver transplantation. RAM was applicable in their study because it enabled them to show that the assessment of behavior and adaptive behaviors to stimuli has a direct effect on their adaptive strategies (Ordin, Karayurt, & Wellard, 2013). As such, these findings can be used to develop a planning on nursing activities and as well develop interactive practices.
Roy’s Adaptation Model is an essential conceptual framework because it provides guidance to nursing practice, influences nursing education, and directs nursing research processes. The suitability of this conceptual framework can be attributed to the ability of the model guide the assessment of individual and analyze their ability to adapt to the immediate environment (Shosha, & Kalaldeh, 2012). Nurses are able to use Roy’s Adaptation Model to provide improvements to personal interaction thereby facilitating their ability to adjust to the immediate environment.
