2 1. Are the results of the review/meta-analysis valid?
The results of the review/meta-analysis are certainly not valid. First of all, there is not nearly enough studies that have been performed correctly to make a sound analysis and the writers themselves do a very poor job of drawing conclusions as well as stating what those conclusions are clearly.a. Are the studies contained in the study/meta-analysis randomized clinical trials?

I don’t feel that they were. How some of the data was collected like through diaries isn’t exactly reliable. Especially for that age group. 1 e. Were individual patient data or aggregate data used in the analysis?
Patients were studied individually, obviously, but the data used in the analysis was certainly aggregate.
3 2. What are the results?
Ultimately the authors conclude that music can be used in various situations for mood regulation. Also, there can be different goals in using music for mood regulation, but the authors point out there are serious issues with the research. In fact, they call it “one-sided” because it was slanted towards healthy university students that all came from the same cultural spectrum.a. How large is the intervention or treatment effect (OR, RR, effect size, level of significance)?
Again, this review really does not establish anything concrete and the research examined was not definitive. Music has been shown to have an effect on patients with ADHD, depression, anxiety and anorexia. Therefore, it can and does work, but what exactly were the goals of the treatment? Those are not specified and definitely have an impact on the studies. There just is not enough information to be definitive.3 b. How precise is the intervention or treatment effect (CI)?
I don’t feel that it is hardly at all. This review really does not establish anything other than it seems like music has an effect on regulating emotion in certain situations. There is not an intense amount of scientific data or expanded studies to prove it conclusively.
ARTICLE REVIEW Author 43. Will the results help me in caring for my patients?
Certainly they can. Music as a self regulating tool is an interesting concept that in most instances would not be detrimental. When other forms of treatment may not achieve results or when more work is performed to establish the findings, why not incorporate it into a treatment regimen? Therefore, it definitely can help.a. Are my patients similar to the ones included in the review/meta-analysis?
In a sense, however, the study was composed of nearly all university students. The patient population I contend with is not nearly so homogenous. I see patients of all ages and sizes, so of course, they would have different opinions about music as well as different experiences with it that could either help or their treatment or not really affect it in any meaningful way.2 b. Is it feasible to implement the findings in my practice setting?
It is feasible to implement the findings in my practice setting or even to conduct some background research on my own. Could we not even have office employees play music and note their responses to it while at the office? Or how about my own? Or even discuss it will patients to receive their feedback. There is merit to the study and if it can help patients why not try to use it to its best advantage?2 c. Were all clinically important outcomes considered, including risks and benefits of the treatment?

create sound clinical outcomes. Overall, this study would needs a lot of work. 1 d. How might clinical assessment of the patient provide contraindications that would inhibit me from implementing the treatment?
If the patient is depressed and identifies certain events that could contribute to that emotion that are linked to specific pieces of music, I would not implement that course of action in his/or her treatment. It could actually make their emotional state deteriorate instead of improve. There are many people who do feel a certain emotion when they listen to a song. 1 e. How might the patient’s and his or her family’s preferences and values affect the treatment that is under consideration?
A patient’s preferences or their family’s preferences have a huge affect on using music as a mood regulator. What a person likes is entirely subjective and especially in regards to an art form like music. How a person is raised, what the people around them listen to, what they are exposed to and numerous other factors all determine what an individual develops for their taste. There could be a type of music you would like to use for a treatment, that the patient does not identify with or care for that could have absolutely no effect or send them into a worse mood. Emotions are based on what constitutes a person’s personality so this is very important when examining music as a form of treatment in mood regulation.
