Question one

The overall reaction is always a shock to notice how religion and education have been used as a tool for controlling and brainwashing people. The colonial government had seen that the only way, one could control different generation, is through installation of fear to the authority. All the teachings, that are taught in religion classes and schools, were on how one should respect and become submissive to the authority. One of the most interesting in chapter two is ironical part where the colonial rulers believed their race was a master race, and all the other cultures were inferior. The part, that surprises me from this chapter, is that Even today; we both know that the colonization brought more harm and loss of culture and technology of the Native American and African. However, the educational system makes us believe that colonization was a way of initiating civilization. Who said that the life of people before colonization was not civilized? All the books which read in schools only tell the negative part of the earlier culture.

Question two

Basing my argument from the content read from the chapter the historical interpretation of colonial education system which I align with is that of welter. Welter argued that there should be no continuity of colonial religious and authoritarian qualities of the subsequent school system. The education system should be made in a way that it will benefit every living being. The current forms of governments usually act like the colonial leader. The purpose of education system should be made to help every individual. The system should not be an away of brainwashing the minds of children and making them to believe the purpose of education system is to follow religious order and civil laws. The current western education, only ensures that children receive instruction that they were never used to receive from their parents. This system has brought distinction to reading and writing schools to the grammar school.

Question three

Our current education system plays the same role as the colonial school system. First just like the colonial education system did, the current education ensures that children are taught to receive instruction that they were not receiving from their guardian. The current education system emphasizes on submission to the authority and memorizing of set texts. This is the same idea which was used by the colonial education system through the establishment of schools. The purpose of education has been made as a way of ensuring religious order and civil laws are followed. Our current education system today is slightly allowing freedom for the intellectual. Out of the desire for intellectual freedom, scientific and politics freedom have made the colonial education system, to start changing the religion control over the education system, is getting distinct. Emphasis is now base in developing new knowledge than the previous models. Nowadays the lines between education and religion have become blurred .education seen as a tool for creating submissive citizens. This has led to separate between educations from religion.

Question four

The choice of book that I will for the class is Meier, D. & Wood, G. (2004). Many children left behind. Boston, MA: Beacon Press. The reason for reading this book in class is because the book is opening the minds of the American citizens on 2002 federal law ‘no child left behind act’ NCLB. Instead of improving the public schools which support most of poor and minority children the law is doing the opposite. How does NCLB support an agenda of privatization and an attack on public school? This book is showing the harsh effects of the NCLB instead of assisting all the children. The book is an essential guide to show the wrong and how to solve it. Also, guide us on where we should go back from.
