Introduction
Grand Hospital located in the Midwestern state is facing difficulty in recruitment of new Physicians for enhancing its facilities and for replacing the physicians who are due to retire soon.
Background
Grand Hospital is one the most competitive hospitals in the locality of rural Midwestern state. It is equipped with ultra modern technology and boast of huge infrastructure. It is an early adopter of Healthcare Information Systems utilizing EMR (Electronic Medical Record) and HMS (Hospital Management Systems). Even after large facilities it is been marred with shortage of Physicians mainly due to a perception created around the hospital of it being ‘Physician Unfriendly’. The current needs of the hospital for new staff and the growing perception asserts for employing strategy and innovative approaches.
My Role: Internal Manager
My role as an Internal Manager is to identify the potential areas of innovation, manage the existing staff and help in recruitment of new Physicians starting with the imminent sections of Radiology and Psychiatry. I will be able to solve the imminent problems of staff shortage.
Major Problem Areas
A major problem area is to correct the perception surrounding the Grand Hospital of it being unfriendly to Physicians. Another is to find efficient physicians for employment at the hospital.
Secondary Problem Areas
The next problem area is to evaluate the technological advancements and apply emerging technology like Telemedicine to support the organizations need of Physicians. Telemedicine is becoming an acceptable norm worldwide for solutions to such problems.
Organizational Strength & Weakness
Grand Hospital is in a highly competitive locality and even then, it serves a large number of customer-base on a daily basis. It is an early adopter of technology. The negative perception of the hospital with respect to its policies on reimbursement and absence of reforms has led to low turnout of potential Physicians who can serve the hospital.
Analysis Results
The hospital is well equipped to handle flux of patients. However, it is crippled by shortage of Physicians. One good thing is that it has adopted technology early and that gives an edge in evaluating new advancements of the technology. Telemedicine is a great solution as it provides for physicians to support from remote locations providing their consultations.
Alternative Solutions
As an alternative solution to quickly hire talent and enhance its physician staff is by removing the negative image surrounding its name. This can be done by some advertisements highlighting the salient features of the hospital like its capacity to serve thousands of patients in a day and the adoption of technology.
Action Plan
The below action plan needs to be applied for results:
Advertise for recruitment of new Physicians.
Invite vendors for implementation of Telemedicine in a phased manner.
Prepare a proposal for the higher management for improving the hospital image.
Identify areas of low-cost benefits improvement for the existing Physicians to enhance retention of the existing staff.
