If I were the project manager, I would first conduct a feasibility analysis regarding the need to have one software package for both Ontario and Georgia plants. Understanding the special needs of the two locations would help to iron out the differences between the two teams. It would help to understand the burning needs of the two teams. I would also ensure that I understand the vendors that would be able to get the better of the two software companies. It would be beneficial to understand the feasibility of the system and match the IT needs with the needs of the various requirements of the company. After getting the requirements of the two branches, the team would then come up with specifications of the software packages. The two packages of QAD and Oracle would have to be assessed in terms of their functionality and how they would be fitting in the entire process. Being the project manager, I would understand that having a good information system is the start of the process that would help in understanding the requirements. There are various issues and needs that have to be understood in the entire process.
The investigations that would be done would have to be in two sessions, when the two teams are together and when the two teams are separate. I would make sure that I spend enough time understanding the requirements specifications of the two teams. Having two separate meetings to undertake consultations would help to understand what makes the two teams separate and what brought them together. The site visits would be a strong methodology where the requirements would be known and understood in the entire process. I would make use of site visits before engaging on any of the vendors or engaging in a specific course of action. I would also ensure that there is a wide range of information available before engaging in any aspect and form of implementing a system. It is a project that would need wide consultation and meetings that would be useful in the entire process.
The role of the project manager will be to ensure that there is no faults and problems that will be met in the future while working on a project. In order to ensure that this is the case, I would ensure that the users are aware of their needs and what they would like to have in the future. I would also would want to look at the emerging trends of cloud computing and web-based applications. Instead of the fighting and the strife to have one software package over the other, I would strife to have one software shared on the cloud. It is a project and a direction which will solve cost and future technical requirements. It is important to understand these aspects and have a better management strategy that will be useful in the entire process.
Another issue that I would have to ensure is that the time that would be required to achieve the entire consultation would be minimal. I would not let the feasibility study be an issue of concern that will affect that entire time that the project will be achieved. It is important to have these issues in place and ensure that the project is started on time. These are the aspects that I will make sure they have been met in the project.
