National Parks are large areas that are given a certain protection status for the sake of conserving the unique natural scenery, history or wildlife in the area. It is necessary, to save these landmarks, which are our nations pride, from human exploitation, and conserve them for posterity. Yellowstone was the first to be given the status of a national park. Now we have 59 national parks in the country. National park service was created under the Organic Act of 1916. This service manages all the national parks in US. Visitors are allowed to enter national parks under specific condition, for any of the following purposes: inspirational, educative, cultural, and recreative. US was the first nation to establish national park in the world, and later this has created a revolution in the way we appreciate nature. These places are precious and rare, where less human interference will do more good. Visit these places and see for yourself what nature has to offer. Some of the experiences are soul touching that it is difficult to put them into words. My personal advice is to avoid rushing through when you visit a national park, instead give yourself enough time to savor the movement. I was personally enchanted by the beauty, enormity and splendor of Grand Canyon, which is yet another national park in US.
Sometime these national parks face several issues. It is very difficult to balance conservation with using natural resources. One example is the oil mining activities near the Grand Canyon and the pollution threat it posses for the wildlife and rivers flowing through the area. Visitor’s safety is yet another important issue. Decades of exploration for gold, silver, copper, lead, uranium has created nearly 47,000 abandoned mines in California desert parks. Hikers and off road vehicle tend to fall into these pit. More than 33 people were killed in the period between 1999-2007. National Parks also face threat from changing ecosystem. For example there is a huge destruction of trees at Rocky Mountain National Park due to infestations with bark beetles. Tens of thousands of pines have died since 2002. It is important to conserve national parks, because it is a way of passing the memories and mysteries to the next generation. Above all our own survival depends on conserving these valuable ecosystems of which we are a part.
