If a man sees an old woman and passes by without intervening in their matter – he does not commit a crime because in law, it is not permitted to intervene in anyone else’s personal matter and if there is an issue, it is a personal issue between the man and the old woman, but if the passing by man would have interfered, he can exert his power and enforce the man who is beating to stop the excessive and unjust use of force on someone who is feeble and not in a position to protect herself. It is also possible that if the passer-by had intervened the old woman would have also stopped him not to intervene. In order to avoid this situation the man can stop and politely ask the man to stop beating the old woman or else he would lodge a complain against him that he is found physically abusing the old woman publicly. It is better to take control over matters by intervening than just wait and watch across the street like the others might be doing (Marsh et al, p.1).
On the other hand, if it was a woman passing by the main situation remains the same, but if she stopped and explained to the man to stop beating an old woman she can exert a different kind of emotional pressure by explaining the rights of woman and that she is in a weak position and no matter how wrong she has done, the man has no right to beat the old woman. If the woman is passing by, it is a possibility that she will not merely by-stand, but in fact intervene in this situation in order to stop the man. In this situation, the old woman will also not resist or intervene and she will feel that she is being rescued (Associated Press, p.1)..
