Can Hybrid Cars Be Popular in the Automobile Market?
Gerbis, Nicholas. “What is the Economic Impact of Hybrid Cars?” auto.howstuffworks.com.

Gerbis indicates hybrids are now a small percentage of automobiles manufactured and sold worldwide but hybrid models and production levels continue to increase. Legislation and international agreements can help hybrid development and acceptance in the marketplace. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (qtd. in Gerbis) projects that by 2035 several types of hybrids and other alternative fuel vehicles will achieve market parity and capture almost 50 percent of passenger car and light truck sales. Gerbis predicts that hybrid fuel savings will offset the costs of expensive repairs. Hybrid popularity is expected to increase as commercial fleets, rental car and taxi companies buy hybrid vehicles to meet new emission standards and fuel economy concerns. Gerbis negates some of the hybrids’ benefits writing it, “may be a difficult win for American auto companies now that China, which has historically lagged behind the United States and Japan in gasoline-powered vehicles, has thrown its full weight behind cornering the hybrid and electric market.” There are concerns about reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It is also important to know why hybrids sell and to whom. Ultimately, acceptance of hybrids will require a combination of automobile manufacturing, government and consumer acceptance to increase hybrid sales and popularity.
This article provides useful background information and indicates the many influences that affect hybrid sales and popularity. For now, the hybrid market remains a small part of a much larger market and is not likely to grow substantially for a while.
