There are a number of TV programs that touch on the issue of social inequality, thereby bringing about social themes. The program in question for the purpose of this paper is ‘Veronica Mars’, a program aired in America that rightly addresses the issue in question. In a nutshell, this program analyzes the wealth inequality in Neptune, leading to social classification of individuals as being wealthy or being poor. As a matter of fact, individuals in this town were divided into two categories, depending on their level of income and the life they led. The wealthy ones were treated with a lot of respect while the poor ones were often mistreated and mishandled. Most of the scenes of this program address the issue of social inequality, ranging from the family setting to the school setting. Lilly, Veronica’s best friend is murdered in cold blood. Veronica’s father (Neptune’s Sherriff) accuses Lilly’s father of the offence. Lilly’s father was a respectable figure in Neptune as he had single-handedly changed the economy of the town by inventing software that allowed people to stream videos. In the course of the investigations, money plays a big role a Lilly’s father is able to buy his freedom out at the expense of Veronica’s father losing his job. Meanwhile, Veronica is discriminated upon by rich children who criticize her for working for her dad to earn extra cents. This is a perfect show touching on the issue of social inequalities.
As already discussed above, the TV program will analyze the social issue of class differences through wealth. A number of scenes directly address this issue. The first scene, for instance, entails the manner in which Veronica loses her friends because she comes from a not-well to do family. Even her closest friends avoid her for this reason, and for the fact that she works part-time to help her father. The second scene entails when her father loses in the election because he was competing with people who were rich and against his antics. The investigations Veronica’s father was carrying on were also on the verge of collapsing because they were against rich people in Neptune.
Muting the volume of the television during the program’s duration meant that it was difficult to understand the flow and what was going on. In essence, one has to rely on non-verbal communications and symbolism. In different scenes of the program, the body language of the actors kept on changing, depending on the scene in question. Some of the aspects that kept on changing included the gestures the actors used, the facial expressions, and posture stances among other nonverbal cues. At certain points, the actors looked happy, while at other times they kept on frowning. From such facial expressions, it was possible to understand when the actors were having good times and when they were not in agreement. Smiling, for instance, meant the parties were in agreement with whatever they were discussing.
As a matter of fact, the above interpretations are essential in understanding the social class differences. In one way or the other, a smile in the program would necessarily mean the parties are happy and in agreement to whatever being discussed, while a frown would be to the contrary. Despite this, it would be dangerous to generalize the society as a whole depending on the actions of a single individual. In giving such analysis, it is prudent to understand that different scenes and nonverbal cues used are distinct and should never be used to interpret the whole film.
