A short article “Mind Over Mass Media” by Steven Pinker was rather interesting to read and thought provoking. Some of the author’s assertions like ineffectiveness of speed-reading and multitasking have been proven by my personal experience. I have always applied speed-reading only as a tool to get superficial knowledge of a subject and I do believe that only in-depth studies provide advanced expertise. As for true multitasking, it is a simultaneous completion of complicated tasks and only a few people with exceptional minds are able to excel at it. However, for ordinary people it is sometimes hard to eat a sandwich and concentrate on the morning news. My personal attempts in multitasking have also been rather unsuccessful, as I usually fail to do two things at a time.
Additionally, I will have to agree with Steven Pinker’s refutation of the idea that electronic technologies are in any way harmful to people’s intelligence. Author brings up some statistical data that proves wrong previous assumptions of the negative effect of technological advances of humanity. Moreover, living in the modern world, I can observe the fast-moving technological progress with my own eyes. Science and technologies have no limits in the twenty first century, which is the only evidence one might need to be convinced that humanity is constantly getting smarter. In my opinion, attempts to avoid electronic technologies today will only make a person stupid and not otherwise.
All things considered, I have to agree with the idea’s expressed by the author of this article. His arguments are strong and he succeeds in making his point.
