Sample Essay On Obesity In America
One of the most common health problems facing people in the United States today is obesity. This is a major problem and because of this, it is important that everyone understands the negative impacts that being overweight and obese can have on their health. Childhood obesity is continuing to grow, raising the probability that an even higher percentage of the population will have health problems in the future. In addition to physical health, people who are overweight or obese can also have troubles with mental health, as well, such as depression and anxiety.
In my community, there have been many children’s programs set up to assist with childhood obesity. For example, there are afterschool aerobics classes available at the YMCA. Children are encouraged to participate in sports such as football, basketball, baseball, and track. There have also been fundraisers for this issue. This is because I live in a fairly healthy community that wants to ensure that there are not a large number of people with this problem.
Being overweight and obese are not only problems for those suffering from them. They have an economical influence on society, as well. For example, rising health care costs are currently one of the biggest concerns in the United States. A large amount of medical expenses are generated from diseases and surgeries that could have been avoided if several patients were not overweight or obese. The financial strain placed on the country from health problems related to these issues is immense and because of this, our society as a whole, and the medical community, need to address this crisis.
In today’s world children’s environments are often less active and energetic than in the past. Inactivity is a major contributing factor linked to both childhood and adult obesity. Children now spend much more time watching television, playing video games, and using computers.
Another preventive measure to decrease the chances of obesity in children is to focus on eating habits, and construct a healthy diet plan they will be able to follow. This includes limiting the amount of saturated fats they eat, and substituting foods such as crackers and cookies with fruits and vegetables. Portion size should also be discussed with children. If they are able to begin eating healthy when they are younger, this could make it easier for them to continue doing so throughout their lives.
Critical theory is a sociological theory that can be related obesity in that it is directed to how it came to be at a specific point in time, which is approximately twenty or thirty years ago. Combining all of the major sciences should enhance our knowledge of society, and this can be done by looking at statistics of those in our country who are obese and/or have health issues related to obesity. Cultural theory can help explain what is wrong with current social reality in that today’s society, most people believe that there are problems with obesity and healthy eating, but there are not many who do anything. Perhaps doctors could speak to their obese patients every time they go to their office, and these people could put more effort into following healthy eating schedules. It will not happen overnight but if everyone can attempt to do this, over time we can become a healthier, less obese society.
