Times when we could guess a person's education only by listening to him or her speaking or reading his or her letter seem to be gone nowadays. Businesses continue to say that students are not taught to write at their universities and “can't follow a logical train of thoughts or present a reasoned argument” (“University students: They can't write, spell or present an argument”).
This is the result of several factors that contribute and influence our lives at present times. We live “in an era of nonstop e-mail and instant and text messaging”(“Business Schools Take Aim at Better Writing”) and our communication now is driven by speed not by rules. Yesterday students when employed send hundreds of bad messages that is mainly a result of the proofreading absence. We may blame instant messaging that has recently almost dominated over real face-to-face communication for this inability to show best selves by means of writing but indeed the problem lays deeper. One of the main reasons of bad writing skills is laziness and lack of understanding what makes business communication different from instant messaging with friends.
One more problem that prevents students from being able to express what they want to say in writing is lack of reading. “Students don't seem to be reading” and “they are excessively dependent on the internet” which makes the situation even more pitiful. When you read you gain the author's manner of expressing him- or herself and thus develop one of your own. If you are left without any proper example, you can hardly find out how to do it right. Moreover, the art of eloquence is no longer promoted and praised at the universities but highly appreciated at big companies.
In my opinion, evaluating my writing skills according to the above-mentioned criteria, I should say that I can express my thoughts logically. I have enough words to use while writing. I also consider that clarity always prevails in my letters. The importance of the author's voice is observed by me so I do not have any problems with misunderstanding. But I should admit that sometimes I encounter difficulties with grammar and punctuation and due to this fact I always try to proofread what I have written to eliminate the possibility of mistake.
I possess this ability to write correctly thanks to my university and my obsession with literature. I read a lot and I find it not only enjoyable but also useful for writing. I always care about the key message of what I wrote; whether it is clear or not, or maybe it is lost in the excess of words. My scientific adviser told me that if I want to make sure that writing is good, it is better to proofread the letter after five-minute distraction. It always works, I can promptly correct mistakes or re-write sentence improving the perception of what is written. I believe the lack of good writing skills must receive due attention and be dealt with.
