According to Griffith (1998), there is no hope of doing perfect research. Griffith’s (1998) statement is correct because the body of knowledge used as a reference in reasoning and analyzing phenomena is constantly changing. It is also agreeable that an individual’s knowledge and skills changes over time. The reason for this is that there are always loopholes in existing theories that need refinement, improvement, and the addition of knowledge. It is, for this reason, important, to identify areas where an existing theory needs improvement in order to improve the theories. Similarly, it is of great significance for a qualitative researcher to identify the specific areas that need they need to improve on and establish ways of improving on them. It will make them more analytic and more accurate qualitative researchers.
The skills acquired through this course enabled the student to understand Qualitative Reasoning as an area of study that rationalizes logic regarding continuous aspects and phenomena of the physical world. The rationalization is for the purpose of solving problems and planning. The solving of problems and planning is done by employing qualitative and not quantitative information.
In order for qualitative reasoning to be substantial, it is guided by a number of philosophies. The philosophies of qualitative reasoning include discrete values, relevant values, ambiguous values, and modeling a process. Discrete values show constant values by means of distinct entities for reasoning. Relevant values select qualitative standards based on the significance of a task. Ambiguous values provide a range of answers instead of giving one specific answer. Modeling a process signifies a condition or changes in conditions. The challenge is usually in deciding which philosophy of quality reasoning to employ in a given qualitative research study. In order to address this challenge, the research question should be developed in advance in order to guide the researcher in establishing the philosophy that will best answer the research question.
This course has played a significant role in helping the researcher develop the best approach to developing a dissertation topic. A research problem has to be identified, and research questions set based on the identified research problems before coming up with the topic. Once the questions are set, then the philosophies of qualitative reasoning that best answers the research question can be selected. It has changed the researcher's approach since it’s more systematic and logical.
Using a software package has greatly influenced the researcher's understanding since it has facilitated the comprehension of various concepts of qualitative reasoning and analysis. The concepts are applicable in various field of qualitative research. The software has also greatly influenced how the researcher reads and interprets research article findings. The software helped the researcher identify different value philosophies used in research article findings and how to interpret the values.
In conclusion, this course is of great importance in field research since it facilitates problem solving with discrete values. The knowledge and techniques gained in this course also consent the simulation of quantitative structures that are controlled by a number of restraints in the form of inequalities and equalities. Once registered and taken in for the next residency, the researcher will be more analytic and accurate when analyzing possible qualitative phenomena. It is important to identify areas where an existing theory needs improvement in order to improve the theories. Also, it is significant to note that the rationalization is for the purpose of solving problems and planning.
