The Vietnam War had a significant impact on the international perception of the United States in terms of wealth, fame and power in more negative ways than one. United States claimed that the reason it went to war in Vietnam was to prevent the spread of communism which was creeping through Asia and its withdrawal of forces in 1973 followed by the unification of Vietnam under a communist government in 1975 did not produce the expected results but instead the opposite result were yielded. The failure of the US in the Vietnam War and withdrawal of its forces painted the picture of a weaker state than it was presumed to be. The world’s perspective was that there was no way such a powerful nation would lose to a small state such as Vietnam. The US intervention into what seemed like a local struggle in Vietnam and turning it into an international dispute displayed the United States as a weak state in its decision-making, planning and also leadership. The war caused a tremendous loss in material, weaponry, loss of life and the political culture with no logical explanation what the losses were worth because what the United States claimed to fight so hard for was nothing but a zero-sum game. Power, fame and wealth all experienced an adverse impact in the US following the Vietnam War. I believe that if anything the US have not changed nor learned anything from the Vietnam War. It is because even after the catastrophic failure the US did not stop invasions in other countries. Let’s take the US-Iraq invasion into account where the US invaded Iraq in 2003 with claims that Iraq had weapons of mass destructions and to end the reign of Saddam Hussein who was accused of supporting terrorism. The invasion was not legitimate since Iraq was not an inch as a result of Vietnam. Question 2. The youth and university students were mostly responsible for the anti-Vietnam War movement found in the US. The single most movement that I can think have today is the Pennsylvania Youth Action, which works towards social justice in our nation today. There are various aspects of the American dream affected by the lack of movements or youth involvements in the US. The American dream entails achievements and wealth as a result of working hard and a dream of a simple living with fulfillment and equality among all people. It also entails a fair and free democracy and the acceptance of immigrants and their culture. The lack of youth involvements and movements has contributed to the failure of equal treatment among immigrants, and the movement would gain a much felt momentum if young Americans are exposed more to the aspects of the American dream. Question 3 The anti-Vietnam movement was very popular and influenced the US to withdraw from Vietnam. The level of mobilization and organization in the anti-Vietnam war was very much higher compared to that of the Pennsylvania Youth Action. With every anti-war movement today there is a few turn up of people compares to the past where the movements had a higher desire to influence the decision making process, while both the movements protest unpopular policies and decisions in the US the changing dynamics of politics and leadership has created a big gap of differences between the two movements.
